Due to very personal reason (that benefits our 10yr old son) we requested to attend the out of catchment school near us (7 min away) we filled out the paperwork. Was told by the school board that first they place all the in catchment kids and then if there is room, they can place they out of catchment kids.
Was told by the board just before school started that there is no room at the Brentwood Elementary school and you have to go to Keating (5 min away).

We have never been to Keating so our reasons for wanting to go to Brentwood are not anything negative against Keating.

We find out from the vice principal at Brentwood elementary that there in fact is room there and they were very kind to us and said that they would welcome our son there but we have to speak to the board about it.

We call the school board and are told that it doesn’t matter if there is room there and that these decisions are up to the board not the schools or principals.

I asked why he can’t go if there is room-
“We have a long waitlist of out of catchment students”

I ask “so you have a waitlist of kids wanting to get into grade 5 at Brentwood?”

“Well no, it’s complicated and you wouldn’t understand”

And it’s true I don’t understand. I don’t understand how it’s in someone’s power to be able to help a ten year old and by extension, his whole family, and yet they don’t want to help.

I asked to speak to the superintendent and was told literally word for word “he is too busy to speak to you, but he says NO, No you cannot go to the Brentwood school you can only go to Keating”

There were more things I was told that don’t make sense.

“We are currently placing only in catchment student, later we place out of catchment students “

Me: “when do you place the out of catchment student?, what date?”

“OH well by the 15 of September”
(It was the 12th when we were speaking).
“So if you start to go to your catchment school then later we can let you know if you can go to the out of catchment school. But, if you start to go to Keating, you probably won’t be put anywhere else”

Me: “so I shouldn’t go to Keating then? Because if I do, then you won’t take me seriously that we want to go to Brentwood?”

It sounds like the school board has a bunch of one liners they are told to tell parents to shut them up. The individual needs of the child doesn’t matter, all that matters is that you do what you are told. You have no options and anyone “higher up” doesn’t want to speak to you. When you ask “why” and question anything you’re given another one liner that doesn’t even answer your question. My question is quite simple:

Why can’t you allow my ten yr old son to attend the elementary that will best suit his individual needs - when THERE IS ROOM AT THAT ELEMENTARY SCHOOL.

I understand if it was very full the priority goes to in catchment, but I do not understand when it is in your power to do something good and you just don’t want to.
