This trail is NOT wheelchair accessible, despite maps saying it is. I'll start this off by saying, I recognize that there is work that has gone into this to make it better, however it's still not up to code.

Starting the trail off, there is a 2-3 inch drop from the parking lot onto the trail, which is very washed out (I recognize that it just rained) however the steepness of this section of the trail was also way too steep for a manual wheelchair, as I could barely control the speed going down the hill. There are multiple hills along the trail that are too steep in both directions, where I take struggled in my wheelchair.
I believe (I may be incorrect) that the maximum lip allowed for accessible areas is 1 inch.

Along several locations of the trail, there are roots that break the surface and cover at least half of the trail.

The boardwalks are not a level surface for going along. In fact nearly all of them are askew sloping sideways. This needs to be fixed!
The boardwalks also need a curb on the edges to prevent mobility devices from rolling off the edge. There were multiple times where if I didn't have as good of control of my chair as I do, I would have ended up in the water.
At minimum a 3" tall curb along the edges of the boardwalk would be a huge piece of mind.

The last section of the trail, there is a sandy section. Sand is very difficult to self propel and mobility device through.

I really hope that the park staff make edits to this trail to make it accessible, like what they advertise it as.

Absolutely beautiful trail but be aware it is FULL OF FLIES that attack you consistently by landing on you non-stop during our visit in 9 Jun 2025!

We recommend you bring an electric fly swatter to clear the hundreds of flies for the rest of us to have a nice visit 😆

But if you keep walking it's fine, the moment you stop & take photos & videos, you'll end up like us in the vid 😂

A very short walk - easy Plenty of parking space when we were there.. So go for it if you're already in Algonquin Provincial Park!

Hiking trails are one of my true enjoyments in life. Being out in nature and getting to see and learn about environments. The Spruce Big didn't disappoint. First it's in Algonquin Park, second it's short and on a very hot day that is important. Third it takes you through a variety of landscapes being shaped. It's living and breathing. Take the time to enjoy it. This is our planet and it is spectacular.

Nice easy trail, lots of ladyslippers. Mostly wooden platform trail, water was flowing pretty good and bugs are kind of thick. Pit toilets at the trailhead parking lot.
