This school sucked, just don’t do it. When I was in grade 5, they used to tell me and my siblings to shower, and it wasn’t even because we stunk — it was literally because we were Black. If a white person smelled bad, they would never believe it, but they would target us because we were Black.

That whole situation messed with my mental health, my confidence, and my body image. It was humiliating. I would miss a lot of class time because they would force me to shower for over 30 minutes. I’d come to school in a cute outfit my mom picked for me, like a dress or a skirt, and then they’d make me change into gym clothes from the lost and found while they washed my clothes and even my backpack. I had to walk around without my backpack, and people would ask about my stuff, but I was too embarrassed to say I was showering at school. The whole process was just humiliating.
