In 2022 indigenous women specifically were targeted in an ad that there was going to be an all indigenous women carpentry foundation and apprenticeship. They promised hours that we would get towards the apprenticeship and other courses such as telehandler operator etc. That didn't happen for everyone. I myself was kept from these extra courses and during the duration of the program the instructor did the unthinkable.
He had privately sent unsolicited/un-professional texts to a student. The college and OTDC hadn't seen this happen in approximately 15 years.
They dealt with the then issue and replaced the instructor as he was also unprofessional and did not even have a full teaching degree. They decided to cancel school for a week and prior to this they even offered the then instructor a "mental health break" which he refused to take and then he ended up lashing out at classmates yelling at them and during his teaching duration made insulting and racial comments that were inappropriate.
As they replaced him the following week, we were no longer eligible for our apprenticeship hours or the final exam. We indigenous women were threatened to keep coming to class or be cut off. Just like a treaty they did not honor their word and this was a 7 month course, us indigenous women of course being the guina pigs example: this was the first class they were offering like this and it ended terribly. The college did nothing but hand off the incident to the next person and they handed it over again with no issues resolved. 10/10 WOULDN'T RECCOMEND DO NOT SIGN YOUR LIFE AWAY AND WASTE YOUR TIME.
WE NEVER HAD OUR HOURS, AND IT ENDED UP BEING A COMPLETE WASTE OF TIME.
I hope my classmates and I get justice one day. At least a for chance, like I said they pick and choose favorites and for some reason the single mother of 3 never even got offered to the telehandler certificate when the other classmates were. Also the racism.
Oh and for the instructor that was replaced he just moved to another campus where he is still working with the Women in Trades program.
The college was at Okanagan College and nothing was ever resolved on their end or ours.
