My family and I found ourselves pleasantly surprised during our journey in the Okanagan Valley when we stumbled upon a hidden gem: a charming Waldorf school. As immigrants, we were accustomed to conventional educational systems from our homeland. Yet, the warmth and creativity exuding from the school's atmosphere captivated us instantly. Stepping onto the campus, we were greeted by vibrant murals, lush gardens, and children immersed in imaginative play. Our initial hesitations melted away as we discovered the school's holistic approach, emphasizing not only academic excellence but also artistic expression and a profound connection to nature. We were welcomed with open arms by the school community, finding solace in knowing that our children, too, would thrive in this nurturing environment. Embracing both our cultural heritage and our newfound home in the Okanagan, we felt a deep sense of pride knowing our children would receive an education that mirrored our values and aspirations.

My three children attend OWS and we have truly appreciated the breadth of the experiences they have had. The teachers and staff are amazing , and the Waldorf curriculum has met my children’s needs so well at every stage of development, as well as infused their learning with art, music and creativity. We moved to the okanagan so our kids could go to the Waldorf school in lumby. Waldorf education is not typically an affordable option for most families, however the OWS has bucked that trend for years by keeping fees as low as is sustainable. In addition, they have always gone out of their way to provide financial assistance to families who require it. At least half of families currently attending OWS take advantage of the financial assistance program.

The quality of education has not suffered but rather has been enhanced by this inclusion of the people from diverse economic backgrounds. All of the original Waldorf values have been maintained, yet the faculty and administration have shown a constant willingness to challenge those aspects of the program and philosophy that are in need of reformation. As a parent of children from a racial minority, this has been a real blessing for me. My kids go to school feeling 100% safe and supported by the community of educators, parents and peers they are connected with.

Like any growing institution, the OWS is not without growing pains and the inherent challenges that come with expansion. However, the level of community and partnership that is fostered here is something I have never witnessed before. And I have lived and been educated in diverse cultures - from east Asia, the Middle East and North America.

For parents considering an alternate path of education - I cannot stress enough how vital it is that you visit the OWS and see how the community functions. In polarizing times, it has proved to be an oasis of secularity and sanity - as much a support for the parents who send their children here as it is for the kids themselves.
