Today my Mom and I visited Heartland in our pursuit of finding assisted care accommodations for my brother. We were welcomed by their community marketing specialist, Milly Webb. She was so generous in sharing her time and information about the residence as well as her knowledge of other options for consideration.

It is a beautiful, welcoming and very active place with residences that do not look “institutional” but like places you can easily make into a home. The staff were welcoming and seemed happy to be there.

We were given a tour of the available units which are all undergoing upgrades. They are spacious and offer a view, balcony, along with both privacy and support as needed.

If you are considering a place for your loved ones, I highly recommend considering Heartland.

My elderly Mother has resided at The Heartland for more than a year now. The staff have been very patient with her, as she arrived with high anxiety with the passing of her husband. She has now settled in thanks to their continued support. Their follow through has always been on-point with her medical care, and they have taken the time to make sure she has what she needs on a day-to-day basis. I would also like to mention that Keith (sales) was a tremendous help in the beginning of our journey in finding her a room. I would highly recommend The Heartland!

This facility should be recommended for people 60-80 years old who have no dementia, and no physical impairments. It would be a lovely home for people who have just retired and don't want to be burdened with cooking or cleaning and just want to enjoy their life - but it is not a good option if you are actually showing any debilitating signs of aging - physically or mentally.
Because of that, what they provide is not worth the cost. To be fair to the staff - this is a training and management issue, they are not equipped to handle senile people. If you or your loved one needs anything more than what a bed and breakfast can offer - I recommend you look elsewhere.

The staff at Heartland, Okotoks are awesome!! The Sunday brunches have been amazing!! Great way to get families together!! Great atmosphere for the residents and their families!!!

1. POOR FOOD QUALITY/OPTIONS: This has been the general consensus & main complaint of residents for years & they still haven't made long term improvements. Many residents have decided to purchase their own groceries.

2. HIGH TURNOVER OF STAFF: In every department, including executive directors. In the last 5 years there's been 4 or 5 directors. Why, I must ask? This is negatively effecting every department.

3. QUALITY OF CARE: They have resulted in hiring 3rd party nurses that come in to "care" and hand out medications on a periodic/casual basis. Residents want/need consistent nursing staff who knows their schedule and personal needs. Investing in Revera health care employees is crucial.

I'm a concerned family member and if/when I see positive long term changes to my above statements, I'll happily update my review.

My mom has been a resident for 4 years. Excellent facility - bright, cheerful, new, very good common areas. The social director is energetic and caring, with constant activities, trips, and speakers.

The food is average but boring: the residents quip that they're going to grow feathers or fins, because they constantly get chicken or fish.

The medical care is dodgy - mom has been given the wrong dosage of medications multiple times - and her meds come pre-packaged from the pharmacy so "wrong dosage" takes a special kind of carelessness. When we message the Director of Patient Care and Wellness and Life we get reassurances about training and procedures and dedicated staff and other pretty words, but the errors recur. They have many good staff, but some members need a different career rather than yet another discussion.

I've contacted Revera Head Office, and Alberta Health Services, about their errors, in the hope that someone gets excited about this and actually does something. We are also talking about moving mom elsewhere, the last mis-dosage pancaked her blood pressure and was life-threatening.
