A few years ago, my family moved to Canada, and I struggled with English at school. One day, my close friend recommended World Vision Academy for help with this subject.
When I visited the academy with my mom, the principal greeted us warmly and made us feel very welcome. I shared my difficulties with school, explaining that I had trouble keeping up with the content. She suggested that I start with an English class to improve my reading and writing skills.
The teacher was very professional and not only guided me through my school assignments but also helped me address the areas where I struggling. Gradually, my English grade had improved significantly that I got 6/6 most of the time. I decided to enroll in a Science and an AP Physic class.
The AP Physics teacher was incredibly knowledgeable, and with his help, I was able to score a 5 on the AP exam I took last year. I'm so grateful I found World Vision Academy, as I've received tremendous support and made great progress.

Extremely disappointed with this academy. The teachers are unprofessional and the course quality is very poor — definitely not worth the money.
The principal, Michelle, may seem polite at first, but once you sign up, she becomes extremely unreasonable and rigid, especially when it comes to absence requests. She only cares about protecting her own interests and shows no empathy toward students or parents.
One of the classes was canceled without any prior notice, and when I tried to speak with her about it, she completely lost her temper and started yelling at me. Unacceptable behavior from someone running an educational institution.
I do not recommend this place at all. Be warned — don’t be fooled by appearances！！

항상 월드비젼에 감사드리며, 이제 유학생활을 시작하는 아이에게 조금 위로가 되었으면 하는 마음에 제 경험담을 공유하고자 합니다.
1년 전 중2를 막 마친, 영어가 전혀 되지 않는 딸아이를 데리고 벤쿠버에 도착했습니다. 1년 down grade를 원했지만 학교에 들어간지 1개월 반만에 10학년으로 올려보냈습니다. 내성적이고, 영어도 부족하고, 사회성에 소극적이던 아이가 10학년을 견뎌낸다는 것은 어려운 일이었습니다. 더군다나 담임선생님도 없고 혼자 모든걸 감당하며 학교에 적응하는 일은 한국에서는 온실에서 자란 우리 아이들에겐 더욱 힘든 일이었지요.
고민을 하다가 10학년이 되기 직전 여름방학 때 월드비젼을 찾아 방문했습니다. 원장 선생님은 여러 조언과 함께 경험담을 들려주시며 아이에게 용기를 주셨습니다. 그렇게 아이는 10학년을 시작하게 되었고 혼자 점심을 먹으면서도 꿋꿋하게 생활할려고 애쓰는 모습에 안쓰럽기도 하고 대견하기도 했습니다. 그러나 당연히 너무 늦은 학년에 유학을 온 아이가 아무탈이 없을리는 없었습니다. 2학기가 되더니 혼자 우는 모습을 보기도 하였고, 무기력해져갔으며, 점점 학교를 결석하는 날이 많아졌습니다. 무엇보다 영어가 생각만큼 빨리 늘지 않아 자신감이 많이 떨어졌고 친구들과 적극적으로 어울리기를 힘들어했습니다. 학교 교과 선생님, 카운셀러 선생님께 도움을 요청해봤지만 도움은 일시적이었고 모든 것은 오롯이 아이의 몫임을 깨달았습니다. 아이를 지켜보는 저의 마음도 아이만큼 힘들었습니다.
제가 힘을 내고 아이를 긍정적인 태도를 잃지 않게 끌고 갈수 있었던 건 월드비젼의 원장선생님의 도움이 너무나 컸습니다. 힘든 고비마다 원장 선생님은 어려움을 들어주시며 오랫동안 쌓아온 내공으로 여유로움을 잃지 않으시며 함께 해결책을 모색해주셨습니다. 진심어린 마음이 느껴질 정도로 적극적으로 함께 고민해주시는 걸 매번 느꼈습니다. 물론 아이에게도 학업적인 지원, 격려, 따듯함, 현실적인 충고 등 종합적으로 아이가 자신감과 용기를 갖고 앞으로 나갈 수 있게 도움을 주셨습니다. 처음 학원을 다니기로 결심했을 때 캐나다에서까지 사교육에 의존해야 하나하는 자괴감이 들었지만, 단지 사교육이 아니라 아이의 유학 생활 전반에 대한 적응을 진심으로 도와주시고, 아이의 미래를 함께 고민해주신다는 걸 느끼게 되면서 너무나 감사한 마음으로 아이는 현재도 적응 중입니다.
아이는 긍정적인 마인드셋을 가지기 시작했고, 점점 자신감도 생기면서 얼굴에 활기를 찾아가는 중입니다. 어느 학원이나 학업적인 역량은 키워줄 수는 있으나 엄마의 마음으로 아이 한명 한명의 손을 진심으로 잡아주시고 끌고 가는 학원은 드물것입니다. 원장 선생님께 항상 마음으로 감사드리고 있습니다. 아이는 아직 입시를 2년 앞두고 있으며 앞으로 어떻게 성장해갈 지 걱정과 기대가 섞여있습니다. 그러나 든든한 월드비전에서 미래를 고민하고 현재에 충실한 아이로 잘 해 나갈것임을 믿습니다.

After escaping from ESL and transitioning into a "regular" English course, I struggled with its difficulty and gradually lost confidence. During the summer break, my mom enrolled me in an online class with Mr. Turner, an English teacher at World Vision Academy. I strongly resisted at first, thinking that 20 classes over the summer wouldn’t make a difference. However, my mom didn’t listen and signed me up anyway. Contrary to my expectations, the class turned out to be incredibly helpful, and I even started enjoying it. By the end of the summer, I had improved significantly without even realizing it, and in semester two, I earned a strong grade in English. Since then, I have continued attending WVA for other subjects, such as preparing for math contests and the CCC, which has helped me maintain good grades and develop strong study habits.

월드비전에서 저희 아이가 수학과 영어수업을 들었는데 저는 너무 만족해서 리뷰를 남깁니다. 수학은 경시대회반 수업을 들었는데 굉장히 짧게 들었지만 8학년 가우스 시험을 학교에서 봤는데 전체 2등을 했어요. 그리고 지금은 영어 에세이 실력 향상을 위해 수업을 받고 있는데 학생도 저도 만족스럽습니다. 학교 영어 성적은 잘 받는 편이지만 글쓰기 실력은 단단하게 다져놓고 싶어서 시작했어요. 아직 얼마 되지 않았지만 아이도 너무 열심히 하고 선생님도 세컨더리 교사셔서 그런지 정확하게 잘 짚어주고 확실하게 이끌어주시는 것 같더라구요. 원장님은 열정 넘치시고 여러가지 유용한 정보를 많이 주셔서 여러가지로 도움 받고 있습니다.

This has the worst service ever. Michelle is a terrible worker. She gets mad and annoyed when a student asks for help and gets mad if someone doesn't understand how to work something. Instead of helping, she insults you and makes you figure it out. World Vision Academy is terrible

'Solidarity and Empathy Learned Through Volunteering at World Vision'

During the height of the pandemic, I felt lost and lonely.
At that time, I decided to volunteer at World Vision, picking up trash in community parks in Surrey and White Rock once a week.

At first, I felt good about contributing to environmental protection. As a foreigner living in Canada, I was proud that I could have a positive impact, even in a small way. However, after reading articles about the rise in racism against Asians due to COVID-19, I began to feel uncomfortable around non-Asians. I started questioning, "Why am I even volunteering here?" and gradually lost the motivation to continue my work.

One day, while picking up trash in the park, an elderly white woman approached me and asked, "Where are you from?" I immediately assumed she wanted to start an uncomfortable conversation, so I walked away without answering. However, she followed me and started picking up trash alongside me. She thanked me for the work I was doing and talked about how important it was to stay united during difficult times. Her kind words and actions made me feel ashamed—I had unknowingly labeled all white people as racist.

Through our conversation, I realized that I, too, had been viewing people with prejudice. I learned that it is not race or gender that defines a person, but rather their values and understanding of others. This experience helped me appreciate the importance of diversity and how meaningful relationships are built through understanding and empathy.

My time volunteering at World Vision was more than just an environmental effort. It taught me that true coexistence begins with an open mind—without making assumptions about others before truly getting to know them.

이번 여름방학에도 좋은 영어선생님을 추천해주시고 조언해주셔서 방학동안 영어12과목을 만족할만한 좋은 성적으로 마무리했습니다.
아이의 속도에 맞추어 점심시간도 지나가며 열심히 지도해주셨던 영어선생님과 학생과 선생님 사이에서 놓칠 수 있는 세세한 것까지 챙겨주시는 원장선생님 덕분에 원하는과목을 원하는 성적으로 잘 마무리하고 아이도 한단계 성장한 것 같습니다.
